FAQ’s

  • Our main focus is removing litter and trash from the sidewalks, street, and storm drains. When time allows, we’ll also sweep up leaves and pull weeds.

We report bulk items like tires, appliances, and construction debris to the city for removal.

We’ll clean up anything that is safe to handle, including discarded needles and bagged pet waste. We do not handle other hazardous materials, such as unbagged feces or dead animals.

You will document your work via our mobile app with before and after pictures of your cleanup.

  • A block is one city street between two major intersections and includes both sides of the street. The average block in Philadelphia is 450 ft and has 60 households!

  • We work with each cleaner to match blocks to their neighborhood preferences and availability. Most blocks are scheduled every week. Some blocks are cleaned less frequently (e.g. once or twice per month).

Cleanups are scheduled on a specific day each week and aligned with the city’s trash pickup schedule. By default, most blocks are cleaned the day before trash day and bags are placed curbside for city collection the next day.

Some blocks may be scheduled the day after trash day and bags left with a neighbor for them to hold until the following week. In some cases, we leave bags at a drop off location on the block for the city to collect via a separate pickup.

Cleanup schedules adjust automatically to align with city-observed holidays.

  • Neighbors and businesses fund block cleaning subscriptions. The costs are split between everyone who signs-up on the block. Some blocks have just a few subscribers and others have 25 or more.

Glitter coordinates all subscriber communications and payments from neighbors. Cleaners are encouraged to get to know neighbors, but are not responsible for account-related or payment issues.

  • We provide a branded safety vest, all-weather and winter work gloves, litter grabber, dustpan and broom, collapsible wheeled cart, and an ongoing supply of trash bags.

  • Glitter provides a hands-on, paid training after you are hired. For Cleaners, we’ll show you the steps to completing a block cleanup, how to stay safe and engage positively with neighbors, and how to track your work on our mobile app. For Ambassadors, we will go with you and do a door-knocking session, showing you what to say and how to record your interactions.

We use a team-wide messaging platform for sharing news and updates, discussing cleanup schedules, sharing feedback, and answering your questions. Our support team is available in real-time to help you resolve any issues you run into when working.

We prioritize teammate satisfaction and well-being. We respond promptly and personally to issues or concerns and do everything we can to keep you engaged and appreciated.

  • Cleaners are paid every Tuesday via direct deposit for the work completed that previous week. Semi-annual bonuses of up to 5% of wages are issued in December.

Cleaners are hired and compensated as independent contractors.

  • Neighbors pay for a reliable, weekly cleaning service. We also understand that life happens!

If you aren’t feeling well, have a family emergency, or for any reason can’t complete a cleanup, let us know as soon as possible. If we’re unable to get coverage, we refund subscribers for that week’s service.
